Writing Your Will
What, exactly, is a Will?
A Will is an estate planning tool that allows you to direct what happens to you and your estate upon death. First, you may be wondering how you can direct what happens to yourself. Well, you can direct the funeral arrangements, burial arrangements and the memorial or church service. In addition to that, you can decide who will benefit by getting all or part of your estate. The Will directs how to distribute what you own to those whom you want to have what you currently own. It also directs the method of paying your debts. As stated earlier, if you do not decide what happens to your estate, Pennsylvania will!
What if I already have a Will?
If you already have a will, you are in good shape. However, you want to make sure that your will adequately and sufficiently reflects your intentions and goals. Occasionally, take your Will out and re-read it. Make sure it says what you want it to say. If it does not, bring it in, and we will help you plan your estate more effectively.
Do I need to have a huge estate in order to write a Will?
No! It does not matter what size your estate may be. After all, you still have yourself, and you can plan for your funeral, burial and memorial or church service. Additionally, you never know when you may increase your estate, whether it be by finding $20.00 on the street, or winning $1 Million in the lottery! You should always have a plan!
If I am dead, why should I care what happens to my estate?
While you may be wondering why we would pose such a question, rest assured that many people ask it. You should care for a few reasons. First, it is often difficult enough on loved ones who have lost a close friend or relative to death. By having a will, you minimize any burdens the distribution of your estate may cause. Everything is done on your terms. Second, when an estate is distributed without a plan, it often creates conflict among family members. Jealousy, greed, anger and sadness are all a part of human nature, and unfortunately, can easily enter into the picture when there is no plan. Finally, it is a nice thing to do for yourself and those close to you. Make it easy for everyone.
Do I really have that much control over my estate through a will?
Yes! You can leave your estate to anyone or any entity (charity, corporation, religious organization, school, etc.). And, you can leave your estate in percentages or shares to those whom you want to reward! This can be your family, friends or any entity that may be close to your heart. Once again, you make the call. Your wish is their command!
"Where there's a WILL, there's a way!"
"TRUST your estate!"
